    Academic Integrity in Higher Education: The Case of Plagiarism of Graduation Reports by Undergraduate Seniors in Vietnam

    Abstract
    Plagiarism in higher education has become widespread among students in Vietnam. This paper aims to examine the seriousness of the problem by comparing the severity of plagiarism in two universities, one of which uses Turnitin software to check its student reports. For that purpose, 977 samples have been drawn from 1434 required graduation reports written by senior undergraduates in the economics and management field from 2013 to 2015. Turnitin’s “Similarity Index” (SI) was used to check for alleged plagiarism, which was found to be more widespread at the university not using Turnitin. At that university, 91.7% of the graduation reports were defined as plagiarized, while 61.7% of the reports were plagiarized at the university using the software. The main source of this problem was the use of information from the internet without citing the original authors

    Abstract

    Household-level data were generated from eight villages representing different ecologies and states of infrastructure development from both North and South Vietnam to study the issue of poverty and income distribution. Results show that the adoption of modern rice varieties under irrigated conditions substantially increased rice yield and reduced the unit cost of production, but the profit and income effect was insignificant when they are cultivated under rainfed conditions. The concentration of income and the incidence of poverty were lower in the 'developed' villages than in the 'less developed' villages.

    THE IMPACT OF GREEN REVOLUTION ON RICE PRODUCTION IN VIETNAM

    Abstract

    The current paper reviewed the development of the Green Revolution in Vietnam, using long-term regional yield and modern variety adoption statistics, as well as household data collected in 1996 and 2003. The present study indicates that the Green Revolution began in irrigated favorable areas and spread to the less favorable areas in Vietnam such as in other Asian countries. What is unique in Vietnam is that although the Green Revolution ended in the mid-1980s in the Philippines and Indonesia, it has still been sustained as of 2003. Our analyses revealed that such growth had been supported by continuous improvements of modern varieties by regional research institutes. The varieties imported from China have contributed to the Green Revolution in northern Vietnam and those developed by the International Rice Research Institute in southern Vietnam. The national agricultural research systems have also played a critically important role in developing location-specific and appropriate technologies.

    Là một trong những người sáng lập Khoa Kinh Tế từ năm 1978, cô Trần Thị Út đã cống hiến hết tuổi lao động cho đến khi về hưu năm 2004.

    Sau khi về hưu, cô vẫn tiếp tục công tác với vị trí lãnh đạo tại ĐH Bình Dương, ĐH Hồng Bàng và ĐH Hoa Sen. Cho đến giờ ở tuổi 70, cô Trần Thị Út vẫn tham gia công tác giảng dạy ở ĐH Hoa Sen. Hơn nữa, cô hiện vẫn còn đi các tỉnh làm nghiên cứu như đi chợ. Đúng là nhà giáo không tuổi
